In January 2019, we welcome the arrival of Thomas Rufener as the new managing director of the Singapore-ETH Centre. He brings with him a wealth of experience from industry, including the financial, real estate, and strategy consultancy sectors. Just prior to joining the SEC, he led the operations for global functions at an international insurance company.

In his capacity as managing director, Thomas Rufener will oversee the human resources, finance, information technology, operations, and legal and compliance functions at the centre.

The leadership rejuvenation holds great promise for the eight-year old research centre established by ETH Zurich and Singapore’s National Research Foundation, as part of its CREATE programme. Together with Prof Gerhard Schmitt, director of the Singapore-ETH Centre, Thomas Rufener brings fresh perspectives and energy to bring the centre to new heights.

The centre extends its gratitude to Dr Remo Burkhard, who recently stepped down as managing director, for his dedication in building the centre from scratch to a vibrant research hub of over 200 researchers. Directors and staff members of the SEC jointly wish him and his family all the best as he enters the next phase of his life in Switzerland.
