Business Times celebrates Swiss-Singapore ties

Managing director of the Singapore-ETH Centre, Dr Remo Burkhard, speaks to the Business Times about ETH Zurich's activities in Singapore through the centre, such as the Cooling Singapore project.

Coinciding with the Swiss National Day on 1 August, The Business Times published the Swiss Business Report 2018, featuring the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) as one of the major Swiss institutions in Singapore. The article external pageKeeping our Cool is based on an interview with Dr Remo Burkhard, Managing Director of SEC, who spoke about the Cooling Singapore project and research projects under the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) and Future Resilient Systems (FRS).

Dr Burkhard highlighted the importance of external pageCooling Singapore in not only raising awareness of the urban heat island (UHI) effect and outdoor thermal comfort (OTC), but also in building actionable knowledge and bringing key stakeholders together to work towards mitigating the UHI effect and enhancing OTC. Dr Burkhard also introduced research projects with roots in ETH Zurich in Switzerland, or with strong collaboration not only with SEC's home institution, but also other organistaions in Switzerland.

The Digital Underground project is a collaboration with the Singapore Land Authority and the Geomatics Division of the City of Zurich to develop methods for accurate 3D digital mapping of underground utility networks and other components. The 3for2 Beyond Efficiency brings together a suite of energy-efficient cooling technologies and building design to bring down energy consumption and increase lettable spaces in buildings.

He also lauded the success of FRS’s inaugural Infrastructure Resilience Conference held in Zurich earlier in 2018, as well as the upcoming World Congress on Resilience, Reliability and Asset Management in July 2019, which will be held in Singapore.
